The Danger of Loot Boxes: A Growing Gambling Problem

The popularity of ‘loot boxes’ in video games has skyrocketed in recent years, but a new study has revealed a concerning link between these virtual treasure chests and an increased risk of gambling problems. The research, published in the peer-reviewed journal Addiction Research & Theory, found that gamers who purchased loot boxes were up to two times more likely to bet than those who did not, even when controlling for other recognised risk factors for gambling.

The study analysed the data of more than 1,600 adults in Canada and revealed that gamers who purchased loot boxes were more likely to exhibit problem gambling behaviour than those who did not. This was despite the fact that when controlling for childhood neglect, depression, and other recognised risk factors for gambling, the link between loot boxes and gambling still remained. The authors of the study concluded that psychological factors may not be the only cause of the link between loot boxes and problem gambling.

Furthermore, the study found that loot boxes can be a gateway to real money gambling, as they offer rewards that can be exchanged for real money or used to purchase in-game items. This could entice gamers to transition to real money gambling, as the thrill of winning in-game items can be transferred to the thrill of winning real money.

The findings of this study have had a significant impact on the gaming industry, and several countries have moved to outlaw loot boxes, including Belgium, while many others are considering similar legislation.

The findings of this study are concerning, as they suggest that the risk of problem gambling is greater for those who purchase loot boxes. This has implications for the gaming industry, as well as for governments and lawmakers, who must now consider the safety of gamers who are vulnerable to the lure of these virtual treasure chests. Ultimately, it is essential that the gaming industry takes steps to ensure that gamers are not exposed to the potential risks of gambling.
